Safety Equiptment Really Optional?

The New York Times had an article on the cost of safety items like side air bags and stability control being options that cost you more. Seat belts used to be a similar optional item. No one today would think a seat belt is optional – we have laws requiring your to wear them. The cost of safety items on your car is not something that you are thinking about as you are in a car crash. Things either happen very fast or sometimes it seems like something is unavoidably occurring in slow motion. One safety device that will be standard equipment in 2012 is stability control. It helps your car by detecting and trying to correct skids. In Alabama you see cars hydroplaning in rain. That is where that device is supposed to help. However, you already have equipment that can help keep you from skidding if you maintain it.

What is it? Well, first let’s take a ride down memory lane. It’s a memory of me hydroplaning up in the Smokey Mountains, unfortunately spinning and headed toward a mountain curve backwards. No, I wasn’t driving fast, but I had hydroplaned during rain. The tire pressure was fine, it was the tread that had worn. From that day since (which was before I went to law school), I’ve been a big fan of very good tires with really good tread. I don’t want to have a near death experience and neither should you. Check your tires – the tread and the pressure.

It’s safety equipment that few people think about, but in a hard rain can make a difference for you and your family. Safety equipment is not optional. The extra cost you might spend won’t be what you think about in that near accident you avoid or during one where it protects you. You will also be glad that you maintained the safety equipment that you have – your tires – by regularly checking the tread and the tire pressure.
