Auto Fires

Today, a truck caught fire outside my office window. I called 911. Fortunately, no one was hurt. You see them along the road occasionally, but it’s not every day that you see one outside your window!

First, get away from the fire. Get everyone out of the car or truck as fast as possible.

Second, move far away from the car. Remember that your car or truck has gasoline in it and can explode. Don’t stand close to the vehicle watching the fire. If the car explodes from the gasoline catching fire, you won’t have time to move to cover. So, get back from the car. You can get another car or truck. You don’t want to take the risk of injury. In the case of the fire outside my office window, the police had the entire block blocked off so that no one would get hurt.

Third, call for emergency help. Give them good directions on your location. They are trained to put out fires, but can’t put it out if you don’t give them good information on where you are.

Fourth, don’t be tempted to go back into the car or truck to try to save your possessions. It’s not worth the risk. Be safe and wait for the fire department.

Fifth, don’t be surprised by all of the smoke. Car tires on fire put out a lot of smoke. It’s another reason to stand far back from the burning vehicle.

Firemen and police are trained to deal with this type of emergency. Think through in you mind what you would do to protect yourself and your family if you vehicle caught fire. No trips to the hospital are a great outcome for what is a very dangerous situation. Thankfully, no one was hurt with the fire that occurred today.

Rivals Wreck

I ran across this photo of a wreck at OneMansBlog.com. It looks funny, a FedEx and UPS truck in a wreck. However, many wrecks, collisions, or accidents result in tragedy, death, and permanent injury. I know that I sound like a broken record. However at that risk, be careful. You can easily hurt someone or be hurt if you do not drive defensively. Who caused this accident?

The following wreck was reported July 1st in the Dothan Eagle. The conflicting reports on the cause of accident on U.S. 84 East are typical in an accident case:

When rescue workers arrived at the scene, the Honda Civic was pinned underneath the truck’s trailer. The driver was in stable condition at the hospital. According to the Alabama State troopers, though the wreck is still under investigation, the initial indications are that the truck driver was at fault due to failure to yield right of way.

The truck driver reports a different story. “I was coming out of here, and he hit me from the side,” said the driver of the truck. “I seen him coming. I was trying to get over, but I couldn’t do nothing.”

Here is a situation where witnesses, credibility and experience in handling these types of accidents becomes important. Different stories and different points of view concerning what happened are being expressed. Who cause the accident? That is what a jury decides when a case goes to trial. In this situation who you hire as your attorney can make a big difference.

Motor Vehicle Traffic Crashes As a Leading Cause of Death in the United States

“In 2005, motor vehicle traffic crashes were the leading cause of death for every age 3 through 6 and 8 through 34.” NHTSA’s National Center for Statistics and Analysis (DOT HS 810 936 April 2008). Every kind of vehicle wreck can quickly lead to disaster for a family.

Large trucks in 2006 were involved in there being 4,995 fatal crash victims. Beside death, large trucks were involved in 106,000 being injured in 2006. Clearly truck accidents can cause serious injury. According to data in 2005 failure to keep in the proper lane accounted for the most number of fatal crashes involving large trucks. Other leading large truck fatalities included: driving too fast for conditions or in excess of posted speed limit; inattentive (talking, eating, etc.); failure to yield right-of-way; cellular phone in vehicle; following improperly; failure to obey traffic signs; erratic or reckless driving; drowsy, asleep, fatigued; and other non-moving traffic violations.

Traffic crashes are a leading cause of death. Please be careful and drive safely.
